Beginning to Write March 12, 2006

Spring is the season of new beginnings. Blooming flowers and budding leaves create a feeling of possibility that awakens after the dormancy of winter. It is the perfect time to start a new project, find a new job, or plan for your future…all of which I am in the middle of doing. Perhaps most relevant for right now is the new project. If you’re reading this right now, you’ve stumbled upon it.

Writing has been a part of my life since I learned how to hold a pen, but it has always been about telling someone else’s story: writing research papers based on the thoughts of others, extrapolating policy papers from a pre-set list of bullet points, or promoting products developed in a business plan. I’m really good at translating and interpreting – not so good at original expression. So here my journey begins. I have made some mental notes (now an official “list”) to guide me along the way:(I was really tempted to pull out “The first rule of Fight Club…” reference, but will save it for a later post.)

  1. Find my own voice
  2. It doesn’t have to be perfect
  3. Writing is a process
  4. The goal is to connect with others
  5. Do not be embarrassed
  6. Take responsibility for what is written

The idea of putting original thoughts in writing is actually pretty scary – but without risks, there is no growth. I’ve decided to take nature’s cue and start the process. Please be gentle.
