Wine Lovers
October 11, 2006
A couple of weeks ago, my friend went on a trip to San Francisco and brought me a wonderful souvenir. It was called “Wine Lover’s Chocolate” by The San Francisco Chocolate Factory and I got the 58% dark chocolate that’s specifically made to go well with Merlot.
Being a bit skeptical, I tried it with curiousity. And my oh my, to my surprise, it really went well!! Not that I didn’t believe my friend or anything, but I’ve tried eating dark chocolate with wine before and can’t say it was a nice pairing. Instead, the slight bitterness of the dark chocolate was even more exentuated by the wine and left a tart discomfort in my mouth. BLAH!!
As wine lovers, my husband and I enjoy our special evenings with our own pairing of appetizers and little snacks. We’ve strayed away from hard liquor some years ago and decided to stick to wine - mainly to enjoy the flavor more - but also because it’s easy and affordable compared to other pricier counterparts. Not to mention, we can stay relatively sober even after 2 bottles between the two of us! V-E-R-Y important! And these days, I have to admit, there are so many exciting selections even at the local supermarket, which is a great plus!
Although I’m not so good at picking wines, somehow, my husband really is - I think it’s due to his incredible memory and his genuine love for it. Wine is all about remember the taste along with the country, winery, name and year, so it’s perfect for someone like him. I, on the other hand, take the passenger seat in this decision-making, and just taste and comment on his selection of the day (which he hardly ever goes wrong).
In general, we’re French wine lovers. However, we love anything from Spanish, Chilean to Californian wines… but we both have a special place for the bottles ‘Made in France’. I think that’s one of the connections that brought us together in the first place!
Even know I’m not a chocoholic or sweets person in general, every now and then, I like enjoying my nibbles of cocoa pleasure. And to be able to enjoy it with our favorite wines, is definitely something I will be looking forward to more - even though, it doesn’t beat the ‘foie gras’ or ‘pate campagne’!!

I love dark chocolate! I’ve never had ones formulated for specific types of wine, but I did go to a wine tasting a while back where they specifically had us (me and Art) try some chocolate with one of the wines. I remember it was a blackberry wine. We tried it with and without the chocolate and it made a huge difference in the experience!
Hey — I think I still have a bottle! I’ll bring it to Laura’s Mendhi party and we can actually have it together!
