My first weekend getaway of the year – flying solo, but with a wedding ring. On the way to my hometown, but staying in a hotel like a tourist. Going to see old friends, with whom I had not kept in touch. Thus began my trip home for a benefit to honor the memory of Carol Drennan, my high school drama director who recently lost her battle against lupus.

Let me start by saying, I had one kick a@# wedding!  My husband and I blended cultures, music, food and almost 400 people.  We set the bar culturally for a whole generation of our region’s inter-ethnic couples.  It was the best of many worlds, and all the planning and attention to detail that went into it seemed to be appreciated, if not entirely understood.

I learned a lot during the planning process, both about myself and the people around me, but there are two realizations that have changed my outlook on life.  The first is that, even though it’s scary, you have …

Map of SpainHalf of my husband’s family fled to Spain from Cuba after Castro took over. So after all these years, I ended up having my wish come true - being part of a Spanish family. I have officially become their first Japanese relative and they were all ecstatic to meet me! I never dreamt that marrying a Cuban-American from Miami would give me a whole set of European families. Life is full of wonderful surprises, isn’t it?!

Excerpt MontageOne of the things I love about all the new technology that allows people to quickly and easily share their talents with people on the Web is discovering new artists. These are people that if they just had their own website I might not find, but because they upload images of their work to sites like Flickr, I stumble across them. Come explore the photo sharing site Flickr with me!

Embroidering my LifeExamining a life through a needle and thread — one show at time. Designing a life and taking risks can be easier than you think and make life a rewarding journey. Needlework is one of my great pleasures. I love the process of designing a piece and then watching it come to fruition by the work of my own hands.
